Kearney Donald Partnership has been commissioned to design an extension to the Moorings Hotel at Banavie, Fort William. The hotel sits adjacent to Neptune’s Staircase on the Caledonian Canal, which is a Listed Ancient Monument.
We had previously extended this hotel some 7 years ago in a style in keeping with the neighbouring Thomas Telford houses.
This time however the client wanted a more contemporary design with the additional accommodation opening out onto the Caledonian Canal providing restaurant/cafe facilities as well as public toilets. Additional bedrooms would be provided on the first floor.
The design features a 2 storey slate and render clad “box” with the elevation facing the canal and the mountains beyond being completely glazed. The glazed screen to the cafe/restaurant area fold back across its full width opening out onto a 7m wide timber “boardwalk” with additional seating.
On the first floor the two bedrooms have projecting cantilevered balconies tied into a projecting side wall.
Planning has been granted.
